Iqbal Singh Kang, a consultant at Gurney Harden Solicitors, and No5 Chambers member James Dixon have voiced concerns over Oakwood Prison in Wolverhampton.
Mr Kang, who represents a number of inmates at the prison has said the privatised jail is failing inmates and that “many of the offenders are likely to be as dangerous on release as they were on the day that they were sentenced because so little work is done to address their risk factors.”
James Dixon, who specializes in prison law, agrees with Mr Kang’s concerns. He said “There is a fundamental contradiction between privatisation of prisons and true rehabilitation. The two are uncomfortable bedfellows.”
The two believe that staff training is urgently needed to avoid riots at the prison.
Oakwood is run by security firm G4S and has been criticised in a report by the chief inspector of prisons, which claims that drugs were easier to get hold of than soap.
