Fausto Graciano, 27, Edgbaston, has been jailed for life after admitting the manslaughter of Amarjit Singh Rai, 41, on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Graciano, who worked as a bartender for Mr Rai, and had been admitted to hospital for harming himself.
Mr Rai visited him at this home to check up on him, but he acted violently and the following day Graciano attacked Mr Rai in an alleyway.
When paramedics arrived, they tried to help Mr Rai, who had suffered a cut throat and head injuries. Police arrived and arrested Graciano at the scene. He was deemed unfit for interview and taken to a secure mental health facility, later being brought back to police custody and then charged.
Judge William Davis QC said it was likely Graciano would remain in a secure hospital for years.
