David Lock QC leading counsel for Campaign to Save Lewisham Hospital

The Court of Appeal has ruled that Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt acted outside his powers to implement cuts at Lewisham Hospital. 

In July at the High Court, Mr Justice Silber said that cuts would mean local people having to travel a long way to access vital services. He ruled that Mr Hunt’s decision to cut back emergency and maternity units at the hospital in South East London was unlawful as he lacked power and breached the National Health Services Act 2006.

The government turned to the Court of Appeal this week to try and get the decision overturned, but were unsuccessful. The decision was made by Lord Dyson, Lord Justice Sullivan and Lord Justice Underhill.
