A floodlit, six-a-side cricket tournament taking place tomorrow, 6 September 2013, is being organised as a means of keeping alive the memory of one of the region’s legal greats. The Anthony Barker QC Memorial Shield will be awarded to the team that triumphs at Moseley Cricket Club and all funds raised will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care. The tournament, organised by No5 Chambers, is a tribute to Mr Barker QC, a former Head of Chambers and Head of the Criminal Group, who sadly passed away in March 2012 after a long and brave battle against cancer. It has already generated so much interest around Birmingham’s legal and business communities that twelve teams signed up for the tournament within 24 hours of the decision to hold the event.
“Anthony Barker QC was Head of Chambers between 1995 and 2002,” says Tony McDaid, No5 Chambers Practice Director. “He was a hugely respected figure in the legal world and was instructed on a number of high profile, headline-making cases over his career. Away from the Bar, Anthony was passionate about cricket and so friends and colleagues decided that a cricket tournament would be a fitting memorial to him.”
No5 Chambers’ Anthony Barker QC Memorial Shield 2013 promises to be a great day, whether playing or supporting. Twelve teams will compete on a round robin basis within their groups, each team playing a minimum of 3 matches, with each match consisting of 5 overs per side. The semi-finals and final will be played under floodlights.
The teams competing in the six-a-side cricket tournament for the glittering prize of the Anthony Barker QC Memorial Shield 2013 will be:
• Wragge and Co
• Higgs and Sons
• Kennedys
• DBS Law
• Irwin Mitchell
• Outspire Group
• Morris Orman Hearle
• Regulatory Legal
• RCA Regeneration
• and three teams from No5 Chambers
In addition to the thrill of playing or spectating and listening to the pleasant sound of leather cracking against willow and enjoying refreshments in the pavilion, there will also be an auction and a raffle, with prizes donated so far including cricketing memorabilia.
