An inquest has heard that Geoffrey Godrich, 82, killed himself by throwing himself from the Cow and Calf Rocks on Ilkley Moor on August 15 last year.
Mr Godrich had been depressed at his wife’s death and his failing physical health. The court heard that he pushed himself off the 12-metre high ledge and hit his head on rocks about halfway down then landed on his back. He had left a suicide note for his family.
A climbing group was gathered at the bottom of the cliff when Mr Goodrich fell, and one member, a paramedic, carried out CPR for at least ten minutes before conceding that his injuries were too severe for him to survive.
Dr David Gouldesbrough told the court that the cause of death was multiple injuries to the head, spine and chest.
Assistant Coroner Caroline Sumeray recorded a verdict of suicide.
