Anthony Bull, 22, Erdington, has been found guilty of killing Steven Downes, 22. A second man,  Kyle Finn, 25, also charged with murder was found not guilty by the jury.

The court heard that Steven Downes was beaten over the head with a metal baseball bat around 25 times in the early hours of 27th December 2012. Refuse collectors then discovered his body outside at around 7am.

All three men had been in the flat on the night of the murder. Officers found blood all over the furniture, walls and living room floor. Clothing belonging to Bull also had blood staining on it. Bull repeatedly changed his story throughout the interviews.

During sentencing Judge Thomas stated: “This was a particularly brutal murder without a clear motive on a young man.”

He was sentenced to life imprisonment and will serve a minimum of 18 years.
