Last June, a two day inquest ruled that Thomas Duffy, who was 14 months old, died of natural causes at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch in March 2011. This was despite claims that a medic had failed to spot a heart condition, and the on-call paediatric consultant ‘declined’ to visit Thomas to examine him himself.

This week, Justice Parker ruled that the inquest should have been adjourned. He said: “There was expert evidence heard at the inquest that raised very serious questions indeed about the level of hospital medical care that Thomas had received, particularly from the consultant who, though requested, had declined to come to the hospital.”
