Jatinder Paul, 26, has been jailed for nine years for causing the death of his friend Rajesh Chalotra by dangerous driving.
Mr Chalotra, 36, lost control of his Audi TT in Finchfield Road West, Wolverhampton, and was killed when Paul overtook him in his Audi R8.
Paul previously denied blame for the crash, but two days into the trial at Birmingham Crown Court admitted causing the crash and changed his plea to guilty.
Judge Stuart Rafferty QC said to Paul: “The vehicle you were driving was effectively a road-going racing car capable of enormous speed.
Behind the wheel you became an unmitigated show-off. I have no doubt that you and he had agreed, if not necessarily to race, then to speed along part of your journey.”
