On Tuesday 5th February campaigners gathered outside the House of Commons, celebrating when it was announced that the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill had passed its first parliamentary hurdle.
 
S Chelvan, a No5 barrister and gay rights campaigner described the vote as a landmark moment in the battle for equal rights and said “Separate but equal is not good enough. Gay people are identified as being different and not worthy of this institution — and it is that distancing that fuels discrimination of lesbian and gay people even in 2013.”
