Anthony Brooker, defended by Ian Bridge, pleaded guilty to causing Paul Collins death by careless driving.
Collins, a member of the police force, was killed instantly when Brooker turned his Range Rover across the road to his driveway without noticing Mr Collin’s motorcycle in his pathway. Brooker cannot account for why he didn’t see the motorbike. Ian Bridge said: ““The defendant blames himself for what happened.”
“The death of Mr Collins has had a devastating effect on his life. It’s not self-pity or the fear of the consequences; it’s the fact that he is preoccupied with a wish to engage with Mr Collins’ family and say how sorry he is for what happened.
“This was a momentary accident. For reasons he can’t explain, he looked but did not see. It was a terrible mistake which has had terrible consequences.”
Brooker been given a community order with two years supervision, ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work and has been banned from driving for two years, and must take a re-test to get his license back.
