A Liverpool man who is suspected of posing as a vicar and receiving thousands of pounds meant for the most vulnerable members of society appeared in court.

George Christopher Gordon, 51, of Chancellor Court, Toxteth, allegedly perted European grant funding which was earmarked for helping victims of mental illness, depression and sex abuse.

Gordon, who was known by many as “the Reverend”, appeared before Liverpool magistrates court charged with eight counts of obtaining money by deception, five counts of false accounting and 12 counts of fraud by false representation.

He was also charged with failing to surrender to police.

The case was committed to Liverpool Crown Court where Gordon will appear on September 27.

He was granted conditional bail.
