It was a full house No5's latest crime seminar, where the youngest criminal silk in the country gave an insight into bringing serious sexual offences to court.

Michelle Heeley QC was a keynote speaker at the Case Law Update seminar, which was hosted by the Crime Group at No5 in Birmingham.

Michelle regularly prosecutes and defends in the most serious cases, from nationwide drugs conspiracies to murder. She sits as a Recorder – Midland Circuit and presides over Serious Sexual Offences.

She recently featured on BBC2’s The Prosecutors: Prisons, Drugs and Drones, working with Senior Crown Prosecutor, Eran Cutliffe.

Michelle primarily examined the use of S41, relating to the questioning of a complainant about their previous sexual history.

Michelle was joined by Sophie Murray, who specialises in representing vulnerable defendants and those with autism. She regularly advises on instructing mental health experts and related defences in a range of cases.

During the seminar, she focused on “Hybrid” orders, under section 45A of the Mental Health Act 1983, examining hospital detention and penal sentences.
