The captain of London 2012’s GB wheelchair rugby team will be the inspirational guest speaker at a Wheelchair Awareness Day being held in Birmingham.
Steve Brown will offer an insight into how, after serious injury, he overcame the challenges of being in a wheelchair to become a world-class Paralympian, Sky Sports ‘Living for Sport’ mentor and a reporter for Sky Sports’ Game Changers TV show.
He suffered his spinal cord injury in 2005, but went on to get involved in wheelchair rugby. Despite missing out on a place at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, he was selected by Paralympics GB to lead the Parade of Heroes through London, and went on to captain the London 2012 GB Wheelchair Rugby team.
He has been invited to take part in the wheelchair awareness day being hosted by No5 Barristers’ Chambers. Steve will speak to the group about this personal story and then lead them into a session of wheelchair rugby.
The day will begin with an introductory talk from Raquel Siganporia, solicitor of Bolt Burdon Kemp and Vice Chair of the Spinal Injuries Association, who will explain a little about the SIA along with an insight into her own experience as a wheelchair user.
Wheelchair skills will be taught by the Back Up trust, a charity dedicated to training, supporting and mentoring people with spinal cord injuries, and their families. Guests will then be let loose on the streets of Birmingham to complete a list of everyday challenges faced by wheelchair users, scoring points for tasks completed.
Before lunch, Claire Aston, an occupational therapist, will talk about her specialism in the area of wheelchairs, seating and 24-hour postural management.
