As an expert in all areas of police law, Colin Banham of No5 Barristers’ Chambers has been invited to address the Police Federation’s annual seminar on Post Incident Procedures (PIPs).
Colin is the only barrister appearing at the seminar, which is being held in Leicestershire, today (October 15) and tomorrow (October 16). Other speakers include representatives of PFEW, the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), the College of Policing (COP), the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) and medical experts.
Post Incident Procedures (PIPs) carry so much importance in the worlds of firearms and operational policing, such is the nature of any incident classified as a death or serious injury. The seminar’s focus is on ensuring that Post Incident Managers, Federation Representatives, solicitors and other stakeholders have access to the latest learning and thinking, as well as hearing first-hand accounts from practitioners and experts in the field.
For almost 20 years, Colin has appeared on behalf of officers at gross misconduct hearings, as well as related appeals to the Police Appeals Tribunal and on Judicial Review. He often protects officers’ interests at subsequent Article 2 (jury) Inquests. He has vast experience dealing with complex cases after lengthy Independent Office for Police Conduct investigations.
Colin also advises in employment matters and is a specialist advocate in discrimination law. He is often instructed on appeal to the Police Appeals Tribunal from Stage 3 meetings under the Performance Regulations. He has appeared before the Police Medical Appeals Board and in the Crown Court on pensions matters.
