No5 Chambers are proud to sponsor UK Jessup Moot 2012

No5 Chambers is delighted to be a joint sponsor with White & Case LLP of the 2012 UK National Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition

The Jessup is the largest and most prestigious moot competition in the world, attracting participants from over 500 law schools in more than 100 countries in recent years. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.

Thousands of law students from around the world will work all year long on this season's Jessup Problem, which will address the legality of the destruction of a cultural site, who may represent a State after a coup d’etat, and State responsibility for a regional operation. Most students must first compete in national and regional competitions (mostly held in January-March) to earn the right to advance to the White & Case International Rounds held every spring in Washington, D.C.

A team from the United Kingdom first competed in the Jessup in 1970 and since then the UK National Competition has grown in size and quality. The UK Jessup represents both the beginning and the end of different aspects of the competition. They mark the conclusion of many months of preparation by the competing teams filled with research, legal arguments and countless hours of perfecting mooting skills. They are also the beginning of what many will regard as the pinnacle of the competition - the demanding oral rounds of the UK National Competition.

The 2012 UK Jessup will take place on 16-19 February at The Honourable Gray's Inn in London. The UK Jessup is an important stepping-stone for the Jessup teams who advance to represent the UK at the White & Case International Rounds, or Jessup World Championships, to be held in Washington DC from 25-31 March 2012.

The UK Jessup teams perform exceptionally well at the International Rounds. The UK teams have received memorial and oralist awards and in recent years almost always place in the top 24 teams in the Preliminary Rounds.
