Tony Smith QC - Crime
Tony is an all round advocate who has been prominent on the Midland and Oxford Circuit for many years as a Silk, Recorder and Bencher of the Inner Temple, as well as being the Head and founder of sets of chambers in Northampton and Birmingham (notably No 7 Fountain Court, now St Philips).
An outstanding cross-examiner, persuasive speaker and skilled tactician he has over the years been in considerable demand for a wide range of cases which have included many high profile murder defences and prosecutions; heavy frauds; drug importations; and child abuse and neglect (he led for the successful appellants in Sheppard and Sheppard in the House of Lords, which re-formulated the law on wilful criminal neglect).
Tony was educated at grammar school and went to Cambridge as an Exhibitioner to read English and Law, subsequently becoming an MA. He was called by the Inner Temple in 1958, served as a Flying Officer in the RAF, and then commenced his circuit practice, taking Silk and becoming a Recorder in 1977, and a Bencher in 1985.
Since coming to No5 in 2002 Tony has conducted a number of successful defences in child abuse, fraud and major drug importation cases.
