Dr Simon Fox QC - Inquests, Public Inquiries & Coronial Law

Simon is a medically qualified specialist clinical negligence silk who has been representing clients at Inquests for over 20 years.

Within clinical negligence, Simon specializes in cases with difficult and complicated issues on breach of duty where his medical qualification enables him to better understand the full breadth of the potential issues, get the most from the experts, present the client’s case at its best and cross-examine effectively.

This specialism is particularly suited to Inquests in which medical treatment of the deceased is an issue.

He often represents families and NHS Trusts in complicated hospital deaths or cases involving concerns over medical management. He has been instructed in a number of inquests which attracted national press interest, have involved issues of neglect and Coroner's recommendations/reports to prevent future deaths.

Simon has been an Assistant Coroner since 2010. He sits in Bristol two days per month in most types of case including injury cases but in particular in hospital and mental health-related cases.

Simon was also appointed Assistant Coroner in Dorset to hear the Inquest of Richard Westgate in 2017 (British Airways pilot alleged to have died from an aerotoxic syndrome due to in-flight exposure to organophosphates).

His practice is nationwide. He spends much of his time travelling the country to meet clients in Chambers (London, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds), solicitor’s offices and in client’s own homes.

Simon qualified first as a doctor at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and worked in the UK, New Zealand and Central Africa from 1989 to 1994. His experience included emergency medicine, terminal care, neurosurgery and treating casualties from the Mozambique civil war.

Simon lives in Cheltenham.

Outside work Simon is a keen hill runner, competing in 24-hour events up to 100 km and 4-day events up to 160 km.
